Homeless people stand around a fire as a man wakes up under the Nelson Mandela bridge in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Metro police officers confiscated some of the men's blankets in an attempt to get the homeless to move away from under the landmark bridge, causing them to suffer with the recent cold front which has arrived in the city. A 17-day-old Wattled Crane eats from a puppet at the Johannesburg Zoo. The Wattled Crane is one of only five critically endangered birds in South Africa with less than 300 found in the wild. In the wild the Wattled Cranes sometimes lay two eggs, but will only raise one chick, leaving the other to die. The Johannesburg Zoo has been working on a Wattled Crane Recovery Program where they harvest one of the eggs to handrear the chick to be released into the wild some day. The puppets are used to prevent human imprinting. Sep 2010
