40 Years of Aviation

Camera Shy

A four-week-old chimp is seen holding onto it’s mother, Daisy, in an enclosure in the Johannesburg Zoo. This is the 5th child to Daisy, who is 29-year, born at the Zoo. Chimps are currently listed as endangered by the WWF caused by the bushmeat trade and habitat destruction. Apr 2013

Kliptown Recovers from Flooding

Seven-year-old Blessing ‘Smiley’ van Wyk plays with his friends in a littered storm water drain in Kliptown, Soweto. The settlement was heavily affected by flooding caused by a cold-front which passed over Gauteng on the weekend causing many children to miss school today. Apr 2013

Hippo Calf Introduced at Pretoria Zoo

A young hippo calf, born in February this year, swims past its mother’s snout as they are introduced into the main herd at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria. Since the calf’s birth it and it’s mother have been separated from the herd to allow the pair to be kept safe and for them to adequately bond. Apr 2013

SA Saves Romanian Lions & Tigers

A lion arrives at OR Tambo international airport in Johannesburg en route to Lionsrock in Bethlehem. Two cubs and their parents were rescued by the animal rights organisation Four Paws from Onesti Zoo, Bacau County. Apr 2013

Wolf on the Wall

Graffiti artist Boyd Hill, from Brixton in London, spray paints a wall in Newtown, Johannesburg. His piece showing the wolf as the South African Police Service and the potential chaos it can create. Hill who lived in Cape Town 11 years ago, was outraged by the stories of police brutality in recent news and decided to paint the piece after he was invited to the country as part of the ‘Back to the City’ festival to be held on 27 April. Mmalerato Rabotapi fits a beaded band around her head after completing it at the BBTB beading workshop in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg. The workshop is run by community members who are making sample necklaces, bracelets and key rings for future sales in the tourism trade in South Africa. March 2013
